Living the Dream: Couple Sells Everything to Embrace Off-Grid Shed Life in Rural Georgia

John and Fin Kernohan sold everything they owned and moved into a 304-square-foot shed in rural Georgia. As detailed in a New York Post article, their story traces a sharp turn from conventional city life toward minimalism and self-sufficiency.

The couple met online in 2010 and married in 2012. Their backgrounds pushed them in this direction. Fin had already lived in unconventional spaces, including a narrowboat in Thailand. John was ready to leave his large Miami home behind. Together, they decided to pursue simplicity.

Their new home was a modest shed in Georgia, purchased for $6,500. With another $6,000, they turned it into something liveable, complete with a greenhouse bathroom and an outdoor kitchen with a koi pond. John initially had doubts about the tight quarters. Over time, though, he found that sharing a small space actually suited them better.

The Kernohans power their home with solar and thermal energy, and use a biogas system for cooking gas, which fits with John’s background in hunting and living close to the land.

Looking beyond their own home, they developed a 16-acre property with an $83,000 investment. They built yurts and tiny houses, listed them on Airbnb, and turned the operation into their main income source. They carry no mortgage.

The property has also become a gathering place for people interested in sustainable living. The Kernohans host festivals and workshops focused on off-grid lifestyles.

Every single morning when I get up, I’m like, ‘Man, I am living a dream — this is how I envisioned I’d live my life — Fin

Their story shows what downsizing can look like when taken seriously. A fulfilling life, it turns out, doesn’t require a big house or conventional comforts.
